I saw his picture today

Standing proud in uniform

Called away to drill

Leaving behind the woman he loves

 

I remember pictures from yesterday

Sitting bored in the classroom

Uncomfortable in his rented tuxedo

Smiling by his first car

Dancing with his new bride

Carrying her away

 

Soon he will hold her close to him

And whisper in her ear

Soon he will be packing

Ready to leave for a year

He will wave from the runway

Surrounded by his men

Standing proudly in uniform

 

For twelve months we will wait

Wondering where he is

Praying he remains safe

Breathlessly waiting for the mail

Afraid to answer the phone when it rings

The months will be hard

Together we will be strong

 

I see him standing before me

The way he did on his wedding day

Smiling at his lovely bride

The pictures I hold in my heart

Keep him home safe with me.
